Reducing bureaucracy or structural change? - July 2008
The policing green paper "From the neighbourhood to the national: policing our communities together" sets out government plans for the future of the police service. Its stated aim is to enable the police to better face current challenges: new forms of criminal activity and terrorism, and new types of partnership working. The green paper proposes new ways of working with the police – not only in relation to preventing crime, but also in improving public confidence.
The green paper focuses on seven key issues:
- Local delivery of policing
- Cut bureaucracy and improve use of technology
- Officer and staff roles and development
- Improving workforce development and deployment
- Government support for reform
- Reinforcing collaboration across police forces to improve ‘protective services’
