INVESTMENT IN TACKLING YOUTH CRIME

£56.5 million is being invested in targeted programmes as part of the Youth Crime Action Plan launched in July - including after-school patrols and crime prevention teams. 69 towns and cities have each been offered £700,000 for intensive action involving early prevention, non-negotiable support and tough enforcement over the next three years. 20 of these local authorities will get an extra £100,000 this year to expand family intervention projects.

The funding will help support actions including:

  • Removing young people at risk from the streets at night
  • Building street-based teams of youth workers and ex-gang members
  • Increasing visible police patrols after school
  • Expanding family intervention projects
  • Providing positive activities for young people
  • Placing specialist teams in police stations to direct young offenders to help

A further £22 million will be distributed to additional areas. All parts of the country will get some support - being able to draw on improved advice and support from experts on tackling youth crime.
